The Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin, Netherbury
King Edgar (958-974) is said to have given Netherburie to the See of Sherborne. In the Domesday Book (1086) Niderberie belonged to the Bishopric of Sarum.
It was once one of the largest parishes in Dorset, as it included Melplash till 1857 and Beaminster till 1849, and Mapperton was formerly attached.
The first vicar known was William de Vicumbe, who occurs 1295. The present church is two or three generations later.
The Tower and Chancel are 15thC; the Font late 12thC. and the Piscina 13thC. The Nave has 14thC. arcades north and south.
